Yellow Arrow

A mobile and online community for exploring cities

Nokia - Cannes Lion

Yellow Arrow (yellowarrow.net) is a mobile / online community and publishing platform that delivers location specific content to help users navigate cities. Developed by a group of geniuses (no, seriously) as part of a fresh approach to world exploration Yellow Arrow provides a platform for a wide variety of voices.

Users mark locations using SMS text messaging and a Yellow Arrow sticker. The postings range from funny stories connected to the location, to insider information that only a die-hard local would know. The site merges the entries with maps, photos and videos to create what Time Out New York called, "a map based on lived experiences," and The Washington Post described as, "a type of geographical blogging."

Yellow Arrow content includes single points of interest authored by users, and professional-quality curated tours through urban landscapes. To date, Yellow Arrows have been placed in 395 cities and 37 countries. Participants hale from 86 countries and include designers, academics, developers, community organizers, and urban explorers. Yellow Arrow has been praised by the digerati and written about in publications such as Wired, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Newsweek and countless others.

Originally conceived as a wide scale art project, the site evolved to include many "curated projects" (developed by the user base, then shaped and edited by our production team), as well as several large in house projects such as, "Capitol of Punk." Capital of Punk, made up of mobile tours and documentary videos about the Washington D.C. punk music scene, features candid interviews with Ian MacKaye (Fugazi), Dante Ferrando (Ignition, Black Cat), Ian Svenonius (Nation of Ulysses, Make-Up) and others. In short, it's cool - and may have cemented our collective street cred.

Interactive Retail Products

Retail mobile content: we developed several content publications that were mobile active

For our partnership with Lonely Planet, we developed Yellow Arrow publications, a series of mobile retail products available in stores. These allow people to purchase interactive mobile experiences as a tool to help them explore cities. For example, the CityTXT Tours :: NYC product, focused on NYC and featured guided tours from a variety of stops along the N train.
